LO3: Self assessment.

In this lesson I have looked a range of hover animations for the hyperlinks on my website, this will help me to improve my website. I have also been looking at the greenpeace wensite and how smooth their website runs.

LO3: Hover effects example

One of the features that I won't on my website is an animation, I want a animation to appear when the user hovers over a hyperlink to take them to another page. My plan is to have all of the hyperlinks pictures of beehives and when the courser moves over the image the animation will begin.

LO2: Legal and ethical.

For my website I will need:
  • Pictures of bees and beehives.
  • A picture of a map of the UK showing where the most affected areas are.
  • Information on how bees work and how they help the environment.
  • Interviews from people who have worked with bees.
Since it is getting closer to winter there are not a lot of bee around so to have any chance getting pictures of bees then I would have to contact a Apiary to see if it would be possible to get some pictures there.
If this is not possible get them from the internet, to avoid breaking any copyright laws I would have to ask them for permission to use their pictures for my website. For getting the interviews with people like the beekeepers I would need some proof of confirmation which allows me to do so, this can either be through a email or a signed document. The picture of the map which shows all of the affected areas can be created on Photoshop and all of the information on the bees can be obtained from the internet.
I want to get most of the materials for my website from Heely City Farm, this is because they are promoting bee-keeping. They have a small apiary on another site in Sheffield but it is private. So I would need permission from the owners from of the apiary if I can take some pictures there.

Launch Date:
From looking at my Gantt chart I would say that the launch date for my website would be in the week beginning on the 30th of November, that is when I take all of the feedback that I have been given from my teacher and my peers to improve my website. It will most likely be launched on the 4th of December.
Budgeting:
When creating this website there are many things that I need to consider in order to work out the budget for it. One of these things is finding a web host, this will allow me to have my domain name. These are some of the web hosting site i looked at and their prices:

  • www.34sp.com - £5.95
  • www.justhost.com - £2.70
  • www.names.co.uk - £4.99
  • www.westhost.com - £6.20
  • www.squarespace.com - £26
One of the other things that I would have to consider is getting a dormain for my website. The best to do would be to rent one so I would only have to pay a small fee each year to keep it, the website GoDaddy would only $10 - $12 (£6 - £8) a year. The last thing that I would need to consider is the maintenance of the website and this is because my website is going to be informative so all of the information of the website will need to be updated. Also, after a while my website may begin to look outdated so I would need to take advantage of some of the new features of some of the newer websites.
People who use my website can sign up to it so they can receive updates and news alerts from the website. This would mean that I would have access to peoples personal information so I would need to apply a SSL certificate to the website to protect peoples information.

LO2: Potential Revenue.

To bring in some revenue I would need some ads on my website that is related to my campaign. I was thinking about having ads from Greenpeace UK or WWF. Be having some of these ads on my website my revenue would come from Cost per Click. The cost per click rate is based on what the advertiser is paying per click. If the cost GreeanPeace is paying for their ad is £2.00 per click, then that £2.00 goes to an ad network feed and then he feed displays £2 ad on your website. I wouldn't make the £2 off that click but I would make a portion of that.

The other way that I could create some revenue is if I get donations from other people who want the website to continue. Some of the money that is made would go the maintenance of the website and what is left goes to ward the total profit.

LO2: Gantt Chart.

This Gantt chart represents the amount of time it should take for each part of this unit.

LO2 Audience.

The audience for the website Hive it would be mainly males who are in the age range of 35 - 65, they would most likely own a farm or some sort of plantation so they would need to rely on bees and the ecosystem. They would also be in the social grade C1 and C2, and would be british, this is because the problem that the website is discussing involves them as they rely on bees to polonaise their crops. Their hobbies would include talking long walks in the county side and observing the wildlife, one of the purposes of the Hive it website is to get people involved in helping out the bees and maintaining their habitats.

LO2 Purpose.

The purpose of the Hive it website it to create an awareness for the bees since they are now becoming endangered. It is also supposed to inform people on what will happen if this continues and how can the public help the bees. It also tells people about the impact the bees have on the ecosystem. The League against cruel sports is a website that is similar to the one that I will be creating. This website has information on why the Government think that culling badgers is the best way to reduce the spread of the disease bTB in cattle. The website has a list of figures about the culling of the badgers, it also has a navigation bar to direct people to other parts of the website.

LO2 Planning a multi page website

There are five learning outcomes for this unit:

LO1: Understand a range of commercial websites
LO2:.Be able to plan the development of a multi-page website
LO3: Be able to create a new multi-page website
LO4: Be able to conduct target audience user testing on their new functional multi-page website
LO5: Be able to evaluate their new functional multi-page website

LO2 Starter.

I have chosen to do my website on Hive it and on that website it will include a spreadsheet of where bees are most prominent in the UK, and a map from two periods of time showing the decline on bees in the UK. There will be a webpage on what steps people can take to help the number of bees increase, and a page on why the number of bees are decreasing and what if means for the people of UK. There will be hyperlinks to other websites where people can gather more information, also there will be picture of beekeepers tending to the bees.

LO1 Analysis of Gumtree.

https://www.gumtree.com/
A) Purpose:
Gumtree is an online community based website which its main purpose is to advertise a range of products. This allows users to put up their items for sale in the hope that someone else would buy it. The target audience for this website would be mainly males who are in the age range 21 - 40, this is because a lot of the items on the site are seen as manly possessions.
B) Visitor needs:
One of the visitor needs of Gumtree is browsing through all of the items, so Gumtree has picture icons of all of the items that are on the website. This allows the user to see if the thing that they are wanting to buy is in good condition. The navigation bar also makes it easier to search through all of the items, the navigation bar has a drop down menu that with different categories within it so the user can filter there search. The navigation bar can also be filtered into how many miles you want to travel to pick up the product.
C) User experience:
Gumtree has a very simple layout which makes it very easy to navigate around the website. The contrasting colours at the header of the website make it easier to find the search bar. The way in which product is displayed makes is simple to see, you have the picture which is followed by the where the location of the product and when the product was put up for auction. To improve the user's experience Gumtree modifies the homepage for each user depending on what the user has looked at or purchased from the website.
D) features:
The Gumtree website has recently had a update so now the producers of the website have include a load of new features to the website. One of those features is called the 'Bump Up' feature, this feature allows the seller to place their advert back to the top of the listings to make it visible to the rest of the users. This feature benefits the user as it helps them their product notice by the public. One of the other main features of this website is the URL feature, this feature is allows the seller to put a link on the advert until the advert expires or it has been removed.
E) Benefits:
One of the benefits for the producers of Gumtree is the responsibility of the website fall on everyone that uses the website and not just the producers. The producers would have to manage the stocks of the website and they would have to monitor what is being auctioned on the website however, the website does rely on the users because if they don't put up anything for sale then the website would fail. One of the benefits for the users is that the website allows the user to communicate with the buyers. One of the advantage of this is that you can talk to the seller at any time about any of the concerns that you may have about the product, where as if you were to go in store to buy something you would have to wait to any sort of customer service.
F) Content:
The content on Gumtree has had many changes since it had first be released, to begin with there was no pictures of any of the items that where listed on the site so people had no idea of the condition of the item that they where going to buy. The advancement of technology now has changed the website so it can better fulfil is purpose. The homepage showcases all of the most recent items that has been put up for sale and all of the items now have the picture of it. This allows it to complete its purpose as a advertising website, people will be more attracted to a certain product if there is a picture with it so they know what exactly they are going to be buying.

LO1 Analysis of Twitter.

https://twitter.com/?lang=en-gb
A) Purpose:
Twitter is an online social networking service that enables people to send and read short messages called tweets. The main purpose of this website is to allow people to communicate to each other on a regular basis. The target audience for this website site would incl0e both genders that are in the age range of 15 - 40. However for the amount of people that actually uses the website they are mainly around the age range of 25 - 35, according to comScore only eleven percent of the Twitter users are between the ages of 12 - 17.
B) Visitor needs:
One of the visitor needs of twitter is to share you messages with your friends and followers and to read what they post. This is done through the live feed, the live feed is twitter's home page and it allows the users to see what their friends are posting. It also gives the users an insight into what some of the celebrities are doing, Twitter allows the user anyone that they want to follow. One they follow that person they can see everything that they post.
C) User experience:
The layout of Twitter is very simple which makes it very easy for a beginner to understand how to use Twitter. The main page (home page) consist of the live feed and under that is the text box which. The user experience will be different for those who are using the app, the user interface is slightly different on the website that it is on the mobile app. Instead of constantly scrolling down own your phone to see new tweets on the computer you would have to click on refresh or press F5, I think that the user experience it better on the website than the mobile app because you can see more of the tweets and it is easier t understand on the website.
D) Features:
One of the features of Twitter is called who to follow, the who to follow tabs shows the user who they might like to follow based on their Twitter activities. This tab allows the uses to become more sociable as it encourages them to communicate with other people. One of the other features on Twitter is the advertising on twitter, by accessing this it allows Twitter to send out promotion tweets about their business or product and they even promote your account to other people. As the advertiser you get access to its analysis.
E) Benefits:
One of the benefits for the users when using twitter is that the users can stay connected with friends and family. Many people post on topics such as major life events, allowing those close to them feel more connect on a daily basis. The other benefit is that they can use it as a form of promotion, since so many people use Twitter all of the world if their ad gets to the right people it can be retweeted to millions of other people. One of the benefits of twitter for the producers is that it has a IPO so it is now on the stock market, therefore members of the public can now buy shares into twitter. This is likely to increase the amount of profit that they make it a year.
F) Content:
One of the main things that has changed on twitter is the live feed, on some of the previous versions of twitter there was a set time that you had to wait before the live feed was updated. But now this ha changed to the user being able to update the live feed whenever they want, this allows twitter to better fulfil its purpose because they can see what people are posting as soon as they send out the tweet. One of the other things that have changed is that they now own Vine which is another social networking app, this allows people to stay connected with each across other social networking sites.

LO1 Analysis of Netflix.

http://www.netflix.com/browse
A) Purpose:
The main purpose of this website is to provide entertainment through the use of the streaming to its target audience, to achieve this it has set up Pay TV windows deals with major studios so that it can gain the right to all of their titles. The target audience for this website would be mainly young people between the age of 18 - 30, although many people who are younger do go on netflix legally you have to be eighteen to buy the subscription.
B) Visitor analysis:
One of the visitor needs of Netflix is to watch TV shows and films of your choice, one of the ways this is met is by having the films being streamed over there media server rather than relying on it streamed onto a devices' own media player. This would probably end up in the user having to download the film which would take up some time. The other way that this need is met is by having the different types of the film genres in different reels. This makes it easier for the user to find the film of TV show that they want to watch.
C) User experience:
The way in which the website is laid out make navigating through the website very easy. becuase all of the films are laid out in reels, all of the content can be presented on one page therefore the user is not constantly going back and forth trying to find the right film. One of the other things that makes for a positive user experience is how the website recommends what films you should watch based on what sort of films or TV shows that you have watched previously which prevents the user searching through a load of shows to find something good.
D) Features:
One of the features of Netflix is the post-play, this is a feature that automatically starts the next episode of a TV show or shows that are recommended after watching a film. One of the other features of Netflix is that Kids only section for the children, this prevents any young children from accessing any content that would be inappropriate for them on the main website. Most of the shows on the kids section have been picked out on the most watch TV shows seen by young children.
E) Benefits:
The benefits for the producer of Netflix is that because the website is available in a lot of the countries there will also be someone somewhere buying the something from the website or paying of the subscription. The producers also don’t have to worry about the stocks because it is all digital The benefits if Netflix for the user is that the as long as you have some sort of internet connection you can access Netflix and. To stream anything form the website as long as your internet connection speeds are above 2 mps. One of the other benefits for the user is that because Netlfix has all of this Pay TV window deals the users don't have to sit through any of the adverts that they would normally get it they was watching TV.
F) Content:
There have been many improvements to the website so that it can better fulfil its purpose, one of the main things that people like to do while on Netflix is to binge watch TV shows. So to improve the users experience the post play was included so people would have to move to watch a full series of a show. One of the other things that have been improved to better fulfil its purpose is the presentation of all the films that they that, all of the films have been placed in different genres and are presented in a slideshow. This prevents the page from appearing crowded and improves the overall user experience.

LO1 Analysis of Barclays online banking.

http://www.barclays.co.uk/P1242652327568
A) Purpose:
The main purpose of this website is to allow people to manage their finances online, like many other websites the intentions behind this one are to provide a service to their targeted audience. Their target audience includes both genders that are between the age of 18 and 45, people within this age gap are old enough to be receiving enough money to mange and are able to navigate their way around all of the security questions and webpages.

One of the visitor needs of Barclays online baking is looking at your available balance and looking at your previous transactions. Since this is mainly seen as the primary use of the website the home page is where you can check your account balance and all of your previous transactions. This page also shows you all of your current plans that you have with Barclays, like if you have taken out any loans.
C) User experience:
On the Barclays website all of the relevant information that the user would want is available through the drop down icons, this allows people to view all of their information about their banks accounts with having to go to different webpages through hyper links. The Barclays website is design off the colours of the Barclays design which is blue and white. All of the white space on the website is white and all of things that may be of use to the user is in blue like the the online bank statements and al of the HTML links. All of the page on the website have very little content on it to prevent people from mis-reading something, this means that the user should have very little problems navigating the page.
D) features:
One of the feature of the Barclays online banking website is its security, after ten minutes of inactivity the user will be logged out of their account, this prevents other people from trying to access their account if they was logged into another computer. One of the other feature of the Barclays online banking website is that all of the user online documents on their account is uploaded tot he Barclays cloud so that if the bank needs to access any of the users information they can do within the user having to bring them into the building.
E) Benefits:
The benefits for the producer of the Barclays online baking website is that they can now see to more people who are sorting out their finance’s because the bank can be access by online or in the building. This takes some of the stress off the employees, as some of the people will access their account online. The benefits for the users for the website is that they can do everything from their own home including paying their bills, for some reason if they needs help then they can call the number that the website provides that will put them through to a employee to guide them through the necessary steps.

One of the things that they have improved since the service has been made available is that they now have a full webpage that has been dedicated to help people and reassure people when using their website. Barclays know that because of security reasons people may not trust the website to handle their money and others simply don't know how to do it since it is relatively new so, by having a help page they can sort any problems that some of the users may face.

LO1 Analysis of Wikipedia.

LO1 Analysis of Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

A) Purpose:
The main purpose of this website is to provide information to people, this website has many factual information on a range of subjects. All of the information that Wikipedia collects is usually from the matter it self, for example Facebook. Most of the information that they receive are sourced from the actual website. This website is targeted towards a mass audience because it is not based on one topic, the range of information that Wikipedia has is enough to appeal to the mass number of people.

B) Visitor needs:
One of the visitor needs of Wikipedia is to find out information on range of topics. So to allow people to search through Wikipedia they have a search bar which will direct the user to the webpage that they wish to use. In some cases what the user is trying to find may be named the same as another source, so the website will present them with all the possibilities of their search.
C) User experience:
Some people may have a hard time picking out any of the information that they would want, a lot of the web pages are filled with pure text and it covers the majority of the page. This makes it hard for the user to pick out any of the information that they needs as they would have to scan through all of the text. One of the ways to combat this is to use the HTML links that are located at the top of the every webpage that will relocate you to whatever section of the page you want to look at however, depending on what you are looking for some of the pages will still have a mass amount of information in that sector.
D) Features:
One of the features of Wikipedia is that the user can customise the way it looks to them. This can be done through a number of skins the Wikipedia allows you to choose from. One of the other features of Wikipedia is that the user can also change the layout of Wikipedia through the use of coding, this a advantage to the suer because sometimes reading things off Wikipedia can be difficult as sometimes the page can appear cramped. Most of the features on Wikipedia is mainly for the editors so that they can present their piece of information in a better way.
E) Benefits:
One of the benefits for the producers of Wikipedia is that because it a community based website the responsibility for what is put out onto Wikipedia share among all of its users, this helps to fulfil its purpose as a website. One of the benefits for the users of the website is that they can rely on the millions of people that use Wikipedia to update and add more information on any areas that may need a bit more adding to it.
F) Content:
The content of Wikipedia hasn't really changed since its first release, from then until now all of the webpages have stayed the same. The only two noticeable changes on the website are that the search bar look smoother and less rugged, and over the years people have added more picture to some of the webpages. However, it is not necessary for the website to have massive updates
because its main purpose is to provide information to its users, as long as they can read and understand what is one the page then it can carry out its purpose.
